Scaramanga turns 18!
By Claire Scaramanga
In October 2000 I was working as the Marketing Director of a dotcom business that was part of the group that also owned the Scotsman and Sunday Business.
Over the course of the year, the dotcom bubble had most definitely burst, leaving me with a team of six great marketers and a launch budget that had dropped from £6 million to £100,000!
I could read the writing on the wall and thought about what to do next. I had long thought of doing my own thing and felt I was in a good place to do so, having recently completed my MBA and learned an enormous amount with the dotcom position, where I started with a totally blank sheet of paper in terms of brand and marketing strategy.
I set up Scaramanga Marketing on 16th November 2000 - with two projects to get me started courtesy of the dotcom - and wrote to everyone I knew. In a quirk of fate, one of my letters to a contact at BT was forwarded on to him in his new role at Nortel, which led to a six month project with Nortel. My sincerest thanks to the person in the BT post room!
The journey has continued from then, with projects with other international organisations, Government departments and SMEs. And for the last 9 years, we have been focussing on the SME market, particularly marketing complex B2B services.
In late 2014, after an earlier expensive and abortive foray into becoming an employer, I decided to give it another go! Since then the team has grown and so have our clients.
And now the company is "coming of age"! We have been working on our plans to grow both our client base and our team over the next couple of years. Global domination here we come!
Thank you so much to the many people who have supported me in this journey in many different ways.
