Ctrl + Alt + Create: my amazing time at Scaramanga
Written by Guest Author
Hi readers, my name is Michaela, a University of Kent graduate. I majored in Business and Management with a Year in Data Analytics (a mouthful, I know, but at least it makes me sound uber smart!). I would say I’ve always been creative – I don’t like doing things the bog-standard way. With that in mind, I knew that the innovative world of marketing was the one for me!

What I wanted from the work experience
Whilst marketing is something that I want to go into, I unfortunately had minimal work experience in this sector. So, I really wanted to get as much out of these two weeks as possible. The social media side of marketing really intrigued me. I use social media quite a bit (okay, I admit, a lot), and I’ve always wondered how businesses got me to buy into their products and services without me even realising it.
Did Scaramanga meet my expectations?...They smashed it!
Scaramanga put me to work straight away – I was sitting and actively participating in meetings, doing social media engagement tasks, learning about their different clients, etc. I learnt so much about marketing and the different aspects and only in two weeks! It’s just testament to how great the company is.
Not only did they actively get me involved in tasks, but they really made me feel part of the team. On my first day, I was super nervous (and it was like 30 degrees that day too, so I was a sweaty mess!), but everyone made me feel instantly welcome – like I had been there for months, not minutes.
Every day is different with Scaramanga – one day I’d be brainstorming ideas for a campaign, the next I would be filming content for a pop-up shop (my favourite was the cookie stand). The only downside of my experience was having to leave.
Something surprising I learnt
How busy they are - 24 hours is not enough for them! Yet even though they have so much on their plate, they are able to keep a cool-head and get the work done. And I learnt two things from this:
- Even though they were so busy, they still made time to teach me things, check up on me and fully involve me in tasks.
- How to prioritise your work tasks and not let work get the better of you.
Special shoutouts
As I finish my two-week experience, I want to give a shoutout to each member of the team.
Claire: From our very first conversation in the interview, your personality and warm smile made it clear that Scaramanga was a place that I could learn and feel supported. Thank you for providing me with this opportunity and the personal and professional advice that you’ve given me that will no doubt help me in the future.
Dawn: Even though we only crossed paths a couple of times, I just wanted to say thank you for being so welcoming. Creating a timetable for me so that I could get the best time out of this experience (and I sure did!) and making sure everything was organised for me really helped me to feel comfortable and prepared from the start.
Emma: The queen of social media! Your creativity and eye for detail really shine through in the way you work, and that’s something I want to replicate. And not only that, but you are a genuine inspiration e.g. running a 10k to raise money for charity. You’ve inspired me in more ways than you’ll know.
Jamie: You made all the complicated stuff look easy – from scheduling posts to navigating platforms I had not even heard of. I’ve learnt so much – more than I expected in just two weeks! You were always up for answering any questions I had, taking time to explain things and supporting me each step of the way! Thank you so much!
Overall summary
I have genuinely loved and enjoyed my time here, and I would highly recommend Scaramanga to anyone looking to gain marketing experience, not just for the skills you pick up but for the people that make the experience so wonderful.
Thank you, Scaramanga, for such an incredible time, and I hope the next work experience intern has the same amazing experience as I had!
