The power of personal branding: stand out in a crowded market
Written by Emma King
When someone says personal branding, what do you think of?
Some may think, why would I need to talk about myself instead of my business? How does that help me as a CEO, an employee or entrepreneur?
Building a strong personal brand is no longer optional; it’s essential in today’s digital-first world. Whether you're aiming to grow your network, attract new opportunities or establish yourself as a thought leader, investing in your personal brand pays long-term dividends.

Some people limit what they share on social media and rightly so, everyone is entitled to their privacy. But people connect through what you share, and the more you share the more you will get back. People want to relate and feel a personal connection, this is what makes you memorable.
Something else personal branding can do is help you with your career path. Future employees get to see who you are, your skills and your personal experience through your eyes instead of just reading a CV.
I actively encourage all my clients and their employees to carry out personal branding posts. This also means letting your staff have a voice and an opinion.
Being unique
What I don’t encourage is that my clients and other companies choose what everyone should post on social media. For example, sending a template or crafted posted to everyone in the team/company.
This then means it’s not real, it’s not authentic and it has no substance. This then shows that all your employees in the company look and think the same.
You need to add your spark, originality, and style to your content.
Getting started
If you’re thinking of beginning your personal branding journey but are not sure where to start, let me help you.
Define your personal brand
- Determine your tone of voice
- Identify your core strengths
- Select your passions and what you will talk about
- Define your audience (CEOs, fellow creatives, recruiters, prospective clients etc.)
Choose your content topics
- Share industry updates or insights
- Talk about your journey such as wins, failures and lessons
- Behind the scenes of your job (especially if you’re a creative)
- Share your opinion in the comments and tag people on trending posts
- Use storytelling to build an emotional connection
Posting
- Post consistently throughout each month - I would recommend at least four posts a month and use a scheduler to be more organised
- Use pictures that represent you, these could be event photos, work in the moment shots, selfie
- If sharing examples of work, create eye catching graphics that are clean and not messy
- Monitor your previous posts to see what time of day gets the highest engagement and which form of content gets the most interaction
- Video content is currently booming so get creative (but don’t hop on every trend!)
